Roger Finds Hope
Our first encounter with Roger occurred in December of 2005. Currently homeless after a recent eviction, Roger was in desperate need of our assistance. When confronted about the situation, Roger explained that he was residing with a friend who was arrested for drug possession. Roger discussed his history of drug abuse and domestic violence and the damage it caused. Roger sought treatment and counseling and was proud to announce that he was approaching 3 years of sobriety.
During the Holiday Season, Roger was bell ringing for the Salvation Army. He was putting in around 53 hours a week, earning about $800/month. However, this income was only temporary. As a father of two young children, Roger emphasized the importance of obtaining stable employment so that he could provide for himself and his family.
After the initial intake in December, Roger was absent from our program for about 3 months. This behavior is not all that unusual with our clientele. There are various circumstances that can lead to ones absence. In Roger’s case, he was able to stay with family for a short period of time.
When Roger returned to the HOPE Center, his Salvation Army work had ended, leaving him unemployed. He was receiving an unemployment check which half of it went towards child support. Roger decided to access our shelter program in hopes of saving the small portion of money that was left of his check.
Roger was visiting the HOPE Center quite often working closely with his Case Manager. In the span of one week, Roger filled out a job application, scheduled an interview, and was hired. Roger landed himself a full-time permanent position, making $1200/month. Just 60 days into the new job Roger was promoted to a supervisor position. His boss even called up to express what a pleasure Roger was to have as an employee and what strong work ethics he displayed on the job.
At the present time, Roger is residing with a friend in the north suburbs. His goal plan is to clear up his credit and save enough money so that he can afford a place of his own come September. Roger is already taking the appropriate steps in achieving this goal.
Roger’s determination and optimistic outlook on life really carried him through the struggles of homelessness. He is a great example for others.
